Rusty Walk is dedicated to my dog, Rusty. He was/is the inspiration for finding power walking. In 2022, I weighed 260 pounds at 45 years old. I told myself for over a decade I would get in shape (fit by 35, 40, etc.). Later in 2023, I weighed 160 pounds. Since then, I have maintained and grown my fitness levels.
I started by walking to the communal mailbox where I live, about 1/2 mile. It was all downhill. I cried on a bench when I realized the return trip was going to be all uphill. For some reason, I did it two days in a row and fell in love. I hated treadmills but liked walking outdoors? Didn't know that was a thing but can't emphasize enough how much it has changed my life since.
Then, I started walking with Rusty. He still gets very excited at the word "walk" and starts to show me where his leash is. His walking pace is over 4 mph, so I tried to match it and that is where my power walking experiences began. We would walk in the freezing cold or burning sun. In the beginning, it was all about how many steps I could manage daily. Now, it is about trying to make the most of each step, maximizing the benefits of the exercise.
